What Happened To Corey (17th hole close out)

As you know, one of the toughest situations in Matchplay is to be one or two holes up, late in the back nine, playing an opponent who gets a few shots from you...

Trying to close it out. Not getting 'protective' but not making any 'mistakes'...

Your mind needs to be right.

And so does your body. Your fitness. Your endurance. Your stamina.

Call it what you want. Your body needs to perform when it counts.

Late in the round...


So when I get feedback from a super hard working client that he closed out an important match from this position, it makes my day!

Check it out:

Corey had been up for much of the match. Playing well but also battling the fact that he was giving his opponent 7 shots.

A little background: Corey and I have been working hard on some lead hip dysfunction, tightness and pain which at its worst had caused Corey to walk in after 5 holes not being able to swing with any power through his lead hip.

Fast forward to now: His flexibility has improved a lot. His core is much stronger. His lead glute is getting more stable.

(He's also lost a few kilos and cm's off his waist, he is eating better and he is much fitter cardio wise...)

Corey is also very diligent and has worked super hard. He thoroughly deserves these improvements.

So, safe to say Corey knew he needed something special on the par 3 17th. He was 1 up with 2 to play. Giving away shots on both the closing holes.

What does he do? Trusts the work he has put into his body...

Trusts his hip. Trusts his core. Trusts his fitness & endurance.

Hits a 4 iron to about a metre and a half.

Makes the putt. Wins the match 2 & 1.

Would this have happened without all the work he put in?

I'd say no.
